makes me crazy that leo conspired to get moretti killed and put carlo in charge, then turns around and says carlo has no respect for the old ways etc...especially given leo goes on to be prominent on the commission and change things up etc. do you think he saw himself in carlo at some point? the way he does with vito? does leo keep seeing himself in younger men then always being disappointed and regretting it...
hmm first of all i love this ask thank u. secondly i think he saw himself in carlo a little. “carlo falcone’s a lot of things but stupid ain’t one of them.” but i think also it has something to do with the big picture. the game of chess they’re all engaged in. i think it disappoints leo that carlo doesn’t behave how he wants him to. i think it offends leo when his pawns act unpredictably and fuck up his plans, his ideas for how things ought to be done. i think that’s also one of the reasons he put vito with carlo, he knew he could trust vito. he spent years grooming him! in fact i wouldn’t be surprised if he planted vito with the goal of one day supporting his claim to take over from falcone. it’s like he fucked up with falcone and is trying again with vito

Carlo and Alberto were friends just because it would be a hilarious coincidence to try and fuck with Vinci at the same time
#they would do everything in their power to shame on vinci#just Carlo and Alberto talking bullshit with Vinci playing with the dogs while Galante is standing there with his eye ticking#he must feel like he’s dealing with bunch of children half of the time

Edward Quinn meets Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco
I was lucky to have been there when they first met.
During the Cannes Film Festival in 1955, an editorial director of Paris Match, Gaston Bonheur, suggested that a meeting between the Hollywood star Grace Kelly and the bachelor Prince Rainier of Monaco could make a nice story.
When he was asked, Prince Rainier agreed and an appointment was arranged. As I already knew and had photographed Prince Rainier and also Grace Kelly, I was asked by Match to go with their team. There was Pierre Galante, then married to actress Olivia de Havilland, Jean-Paul Olivier and Michel Simon. Grace kept us late, so the American car that was to bring her had to speed off. Just as we got to the main road, the driver, Monsieur Lapinière, a Metro Goldwyn representative, suddenly braked. As I was driving very close, so as not to be left behind, I could not stop and crashed into the back of Grace’s car. Fortunately, there was no great damage and we were able to go on.
As there had been no time for lunch, Grace said she wouldn’t mind having a sandwich, so we went to the bar of the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo.
Grace Kelly at the bar of Hotel de Paris.
We got to the palace just after three o’clock, the time set for the rendezvous with the prince. Colonel Severac, the commander of the Palace, came to greet us and explained that Prince Rainier was delayed, but he had telephoned to say that Miss Kelly’s visit to the palace could begin without him. One of Prince Rainier’s personal servants, Michel Demorizi, guided us around some of the great number of rooms in the palace.
In the “Salle du Throne”, Monsieur Demorizi explained that all the reigning princes of the Grimaldi family had been enthroned in this room. We moved through the York Chambers, the “Salle des Glaces” and into the Napoleonic museum, where Grace was obviously impressed when she was shown a lock of Napoleon’s hair. The only one amongst us who did not seem to enjoy the visit was Monsieur Lapinière. It was now nearly four o’clock, and he said that Grace had to leave at once if she was to be ready in time for the official American reception for the festival.
After a while, we all got worried and began to think that Prince Rainier might not come. By now even Grace showed some signs of nervousness, but perhaps not for the same reason. She looked around for a mirror to make sure her makeup was alright. While we all waited, Grace questioned us: How does one address a prince? Could Prince Rainier speak English? How old is he?
Finally, the prince arrived and Grace Kelly, who had rehearsed her royal curtsy several times, hardly bent her knee when she was face to face with Prince Rainier. With a reassuring smile and a simple “Hello, pleased to meet you”, the prince seemed to put Grace at ease.
Grace Kelly meets Prince Rainier. The moment of the first formal handshake.
It was amazing, however, that these two famous persons seemed shy and intimidated. Grace looked at Rainier and seemed at loss for words.
Sensing this tension, I thought it might be an appropriate moment to suggest that I would like to take some photos in the palace gardens. This broke the ice. Prince Rainier was relieved and agreed at once. Naturally my main reason for asking them to go outside was just a photographer’s reaction. The light was better outside and of course the garden would make a better setting. Prince Rainier took Grace over to a spot where he could show her the view over his principality. They were both relaxed now. Their conversation became easier and they seemed to be getting on well.
Prince Rainier took Grace down to his exotic gardens and then to his lions’ cage. Grace seemed astonished and quite frightened when Rainier put his arm into the cage and stroked one of the lions. We were all quite happy to prolong this enjoyable visit, but the merciless Monsieur Lapinière seemed on the verge of a nervous fit and kept pointing to his watch. Grace had to take the hint and explained to Prince Rainier that she must go back to Cannes as soon as possible.
Probably not even Prince Rainier realized, while he was doing the honour of showing his palace to Grace Kelly, that she was to be the future sovereign. Grace was quite silent as she was driven back to Cannes. Her only remark was: “He is charming, charming.”
The pictures of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier appeared in Paris Match, but the story was quickly forgotten by most people, except by Prince Rainier and perhaps by Grace Kelly. Prince Rainier arranged for showings of all of Grace Kelly’s films in his private screening room at the palace. According to his friends, the prince was intrigued and fascinated by the cool enigmatic star from Hollywood.
When Prince Rainier visited the U.S. a few months later, there were a few discreet meetings with Grace Kelly, thanks to the kindly American priest who was Prince Rainier’s palace chaplain, Father Tucker.
Prince Rainier asked Grace Kelly to marry him during a private party in New York. The unofficial news of their engagement travelled very fast and on January 4th, 1956, I was awakened in the middle of the night by a telephone call from New York. At that time long distance calls were still an event. It was Charles Eisnitz of the famous Globe Photo Agency, who called to inform me about Prince Rainier’s engagement and asked me to send all the photos I had of the couple.
The end of the story is well known. After the marriage of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly, it became more and more difficult to get exclusive pictures. I decided to concentrate my work on the artists, and especially on Pablo Picasso.
Edward Quinn

On this day, 11 January 1943, Italian-American anarchist union organiser and newspaper editor Carlo Tresca was assassinated in New York City. Tresca had been a railway union activist and editor back in Italy, and migrated to the US to avoid a prison term. In his new home, Tresca travelled around the country, helping organise workers with the Industrial Workers of the World union. He was active in organising and supporting strikes of miners in Pennsylvania, textile and hotel workers in New York, silk workers in New Jersey and miners in Minnesota. Tresca also dodged assassination, bombing and lynching attempts, arrests, deportation and bogus criminal charges of offences including murder. With the rise of fascism in Italy, Tresca agitated strongly amongst Italian workers in the US to oppose fascists' attempts to gain a foothold in the migrant community as well. Tresca was surveilled by the Department of Justice, and his anti-fascist newspaper Il Martello was held up in the post. Eventually when the Italian fascist government asked the US to suppress Il Martello, the government happily complied. They prosecuted Tresca for sending "obscene matter" through the post, and sentenced him to a year and a day's imprisonment, until mass outrage forced the president to commute his sentence. The most recent research suggests that Tresca was murdered by contract killer Carmine Galante, on the orders of fascist-sympathising mobsters. After his death, Tresca's friend Max Eastman wrote: "For Poetry’s sake, for the sake of his name and memory, Carlo had to die a violent death. He had to die at the hand of a tyrant’s assassin. He had lived a violent life. He had loved danger. He had loved the fight. His last motion was to swing and confront the long-expected enemy. So let us say farewell to Carlo as we hear him say—as he surely would if the breath came back—‘Well, they got me at last!’" https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/2184240811761057/?type=3

Yeah sure, mafia 2 doesn’t have the best writing ever but I love, and genuinely love how paranoid Clemente is portrayed. At least in my eyes.
If it was just the way he keeps strict old fashioned rules (even more than Vinci, since we have Galante telling us that he listens to the young hotheads), but he genuinely doesn’t have an underboss even if Luca seems to be somehow filling this role, since he seems to be doing most of logistics?? Idk how to explain it but like, but the fp files do show few some moments where it’s Luca, not Clemente but Luca, dealing with the other dons right
So we can assume that yeah, Luca is somehow the underboss but he doesn’t have the official title. Why? Maybe it might have something to do with the fact that Luca literally killed his previous capo for climbing the ranks the same year that Carlo took over after Moretti, who died and Carlo was ready to just yk, jump in and take over? Just Clemente being scared shitless that Luca (who is very impulsive and known for his not so calm behavior) might pull the same shit on him? He did it once after all.
I don’t know, just liking how it lines up (at least in my head). Like, he’s already seen like second rated next to the other families, so don’t tell me that he didn’t live in paranoia that someone might take him out and take it over, because after all he’s just second rated to everyone else.
As always, this might all be just in my head so don’t take this like me trying to preach this as a fact. It’s more of a head canon anyway, I just wanted to share this idea 😄👍
#been thinking about this for a looong time#I hate how little there is about Clemente family like cmon they have potential 😞#as always please tell me if this is far fetched#anyway#alberto clemente#luca gurino#mafia 2

ok here it is in more coherent terms. falcone kills clemente bc he wants to take over the heroin trade. with clemente gone, he makes a deal with the triads, only falcone can do business with them. so when henry sets up a meeting (knowledgeable of the triad by working for clemente, but unaware of falcone’s deal), the triad let falcone know. falcone assumes vinci’s guys have started getting in on it, but he can’t just send his own guys over there to find out or he risks exposing his own dealings, so he has his guys dress up like cops. this benefits the triad too, they get the money and the heroin back. falcone’s guys—the fake cops—recognise henry enough to know he’s running with falcone now (assuming it’s the fake cops who let carlo know about the deal. bc let’s be real, at least one of them would’ve survived) so they must recognise joe and vito too. joe and vito he’ll deal with later, but for now—henry. the clemente guy who failed the hit on leo galante. he kept him around just in case he could find a use for him, and how he has. he lets the triad think henry, joe & vito were vinci’s men, and plants seeds so that the triad find out through their own sources that henry’s a rat. a vinci rat? so when they kill him, and subsequently joe and vito retaliate in a huge way, they assume vinci has made a move against them again. war breaks out, and with the triad and vinci focusing all their anger on each other, look who comes out ahead!

Hello!! I’m trying to understand the lore of Mafia 2 and I’m very confused by the fact that it was not Carlo, but Steve who planted the bomb in Moretti’s car. What the fuck is between these two
so basically: carlo conspired with the vinci family–to my understanding, with leo galante specifically–to kill moretti and end the war so that he could take over. steve worked for derek, who was a capo in the vinci family. hence: they send an associate (steve, who couldn't be made) from their own family to actually rig up the bomb, presumably on carlo's info–perhaps as a show of faith, perhaps because steve knew how to do it/was the best man for the job, and probably because carlo couldn't take over if he accidentally blew himself up. hopefully i explained that well.
